What is CNC Machining?

CNC machining stands for Computer Numerical Control machining. It is a subtractive manufacturing process that uses pre-programmed computer software to control the movement of factory tools and machinery. This enables the precise removal of material from a solid block (workpiece) to create a custom-designed part.

The process typically involves:

CNC machining is highly valued for its accuracy, repeatability, and versatility in working with a wide range of materials to produce custom components for various industries.

CNC Machining FAQs

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a subtractive manufacturing process where computer-controlled tools precisely remove material from a solid workpiece to create a custom-designed part. It offers high accuracy, repeatability, and versatility in producing complex geometries.

CNC machining offers numerous benefits, including exceptional precision and tight tolerances, high repeatability for consistent part quality, versatility across a wide range of materials (metals and plastics), efficiency for both prototyping and production volumes, and the ability to create complex geometries that are difficult with traditional methods.

Goldconn machines a broad range of materials, including various metals (e.g., Aluminum alloys like 6061 and 7075, Stainless Steels 303, 304, 316, Carbon Steel, Brass, Copper, Titanium) and plastics (e.g., ABS, PC, Nylon, POM (Delrin), HDPE, PEEK, PTFE, Acrylic). We can also source specialty materials as required.

Goldconn can consistently achieve tight dimensional tolerances, typically down to ±0.01mm (±0.0004 inches) for critical features. Specific achievable tolerances depend on the material, part geometry, and size, and will be discussed during the design review process.

Yes, Goldconn supports projects across all scales. Our CNC machining capabilities are flexible enough to accommodate rapid prototyping, low-volume custom parts, as well as medium to high-volume production runs, ensuring consistent quality regardless of quantity.

We primarily accept 3D CAD models in industry-standard neutral formats such as STEP (.stp) and IGES (.iges), which ensure accurate data transfer. We also work with native CAD files from common software like SolidWorks (.sldprt, .sldasm) and can often accept DXF for 2D profiles. We highly recommend accompanying 3D files with 2D technical drawings, ideally in PDF format, detailing critical dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish requirements. Please note that STL files are generally not suitable for CNC machining as they are mesh-based and lack the precise geometric data required.

We offer a wide range of integrated post-processing and finishing services, including As-Machined/Deburring, Anodizing (Type II & Type III), Powder Coating, Bead Blasting, Polishing, Heat Treatment, various Plating options (Nickel, Chrome, Zinc, Electroless Nickel), Passivation, Chromate Conversion Coating (Chem Film), and light Assembly services.
